How to Choose a Tarot Spread: From One Card to Ten

Single card, three cards, or the Celtic Cross — when do you use which? One principle settles it: match the depth of the spread to the weight of the question.

Spreads are the skeleton of a tarot reading: each position has a fixed meaning, so cards land with structure. Beginners love asking "which spread is the most accurate?" — there isn't one. There is only suitable or unsuitable. The rule in one sentence: match the depth of the spread to the weight of the question.

One card: quick answers

A single-card draw suits passing thoughts and daily tone-setting: what is today's energy, what should I remember about this? Minimal but laser-focused, read in 30 seconds. The downside is the lack of context — don't bring "should I quit my job?" to a single card.

Three cards: the answer to 80% of questions

Three cards are the king of value. The timeline (past/present/future) traces a matter end to end; a small variation gives you "situation/obstacle/advice." Most everyday dilemmas — should I text them first, can this project move forward — three cards cover thoroughly. When in doubt, use three.

Five to six cards: lay the tangle out

When you're torn between two options, or need to see both people in a relationship at once, you need five cards or more. The Two-Path spread lays where each road leads side by side; Heart to Heart mirrors you and the other person simultaneously — something general spreads simply can't do.

Nine to ten cards: the deep end for life's big questions

Big spreads like the Celtic Cross (ten) and Second Chance (nine) suit long-entangled, deeply-felt questions. The information is enormous: subconscious motives, environmental influences, hopes and fears all surface. The cost is patience — a Celtic Cross deserves ten minutes of reading and days of thinking.

"What three cards can say clearly, ten cards may muddle. Depth isn't "the more the better" — it's exactly enough."

For love, prefer love spreads

Same six cards, but love spreads have positions designed for relationships (their mind / the current state / hidden obstacles) and see finer detail than general spreads. Take matters of the heart to love tarot and general questions to an AI tarot reading — each through its own door.

The lazy option: let the reader choose

Still can't decide? Type your question into an AI tarot reading and the reader will recommend a spread — and tell you why. You can swap it for another: the spread library spells out every position and use case, so pick and go.
