Many people think a tarot reading is all about the cards — but half of it is the question. "Will he come back to me?" and "What is stuck between us, and what can I do about it?" are the same worry phrased two ways; the first gets you a yes or no, the second gets you a map.
Principle 1: Ask "what can I do," not "will it happen"
Tarot is best at showing the energy and trend of a situation, not stamping a verdict on your future. "Will I pass this interview?" puts you in the passenger seat; "What should I show and what should I avoid in this interview?" takes the wheel back. Same event — but you can actually use the second answer.
Principle 2: One question at a time
"Will we get back together, and then will we marry, and will it be happy?" — that is three questions, not one. Every position in a spread has a defined meaning; stuffing multiple questions in only makes the answers interfere. Several things on your mind? Ask them separately, one at a time.
Principle 3: Keep yourself in the question
"What is he thinking?" is fair game — but if every question is about someone else (does he love me, will he leave, how does he see me), even the best answer gives you nothing to act on. A better phrasing includes yourself: "What have I seen clearly in this relationship, and what can I change?" Tarot mirrors your situation, and you are always the protagonist.
"A bad question asks for an answer. A good question asks for a map. Answers fade once heard; a map can carry you far."
Principle 4: Give it a time frame
"How is my love life?" is too big — the cards can't tell whether you mean next month or the rest of your life. Add a frame: "How will this relationship develop over the next three months?" Three months to a year is the sweet spot — shorter gives the cards nothing to say, longer is too volatile to mean anything.
Principle 5: Don't ask what you refuse to hear
If you have already decided on the answer and just want the cards to say it out loud — pause. In that state you will redraw the cards you dislike and doubt the ones you like. Ask when you are genuinely ready to hear any answer.
